Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design. These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.

This c. 1930s example employs a rare oval layout, with a soft light-grey field and delicate floral pattern across the border, worked in a harmonious palette of cornflower blues, peach and with charming lilac accents. A balanced, open composition, lending this carpet a feeling of space and lightness.

In very good to excellent condition, with its borders preserved on all sides.

A true design classic, in a striking format, to suit a wide variety of interiors.
