Handwoven Contemporary Oushak Carpet

Origin: Turkey
Size: 4.84 x 3.47 metres15'9 x 11'4 feet
Reference number: 68421

The weaving workshops of Western Anatolia, where Oushak carpets like this one originated, have a rich history dating back to at least the Early Modern era. The 14th-century explorer Marco Polo once remarked, “Here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets in the world, and with the most beautiful colours.” In the 19th century, these rugs began to be woven in Persia, specifically tailored for the Western market, and they are often found in historic homes across the UK and Europe.

This carpet, finely handwoven in Turkey using the wool-on-wool technique as the 19th-century Oushak carpets were, represents a contemporary reimagination of these luxurious earlier pieces. It features a grand-scale design with a spacious, elegant composition, to which the rare sage green tone of the central field and the wide duck egg blue border add depth and richness.

A stylish piece to complement a tasteful setting.
