The city of Kashan, one of the most renowned and highly regarded centres of Persian rug weaving, first gained prominence in the 16th Century under the Safavid Dynasty. Its workshops quickly earned a reputation for producing some of the most sought-after carpets of the Classical period, a tradition that continued well into the early 20th Century.

This exquisite late 19th-century example originates from the esteemed workshop of the masterweaver ‘Mohtashem’, established in the mid-19th Century. Mohtashem’s pieces are considered the pinnacle of Kashan weavings, distinguished by their creative use of colour and the exceptional softness of their wool – in this case, Merino, or wool of a similar grade. What sets this particular carpet apart is its rare ivory field and matching border – a highly unusual and desirable feature that imparts a well-balanced clarity and refinement to the overall composition. The central design incorporates soft sage green, ochre and indigo tones.

Collector’s pieces such as this are becoming more and more difficulr to find in this condition – a rare work of art, this rug survives in very good original practical condition, and would make a wonderful addition to a tasteful setting.
