Fine Aubusson Carpet of Savonnerie Design – RESERVED
£ 3,900
The town of Aubusson has long been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool.
Styled in the Aubusson tradition, this elegant example has characteristics of French Savonnerie carpets of the 18th Century, featuring a creative all-over design in a natural-dyed colour palette of green, ivory, terracotta, and sky-blue accents. The composition of this piece is made still more remarkable by how fine a weave it has, maintaining a vivid clarity in its drawing.
A highly decorative example to compliment a sophisticated setting.
