Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique quality of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate floral motifs one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece.

This early Malayer rug, dating to the late 19th Century, is a lovely example of its type, with naive tribal motifs rendered in a tasteful palette of sky blue, ochre, tan, camel, and ivory, all in gracefully aged vegetable-dyed wools. The earthy hues serve to complement the pleasant muted blue tones of the highly creative border, significant in its proportions and characteristic of carpets five times its size.

Preserved in very good practical condition for everyday use, with a slight age-related patina further adding to its overall charm.
