Antique Shirvan rugs are among the most highly sought-after Caucasian weavings, renowned for a nuanced, complex style that sets them apart from other rugs from the region. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols, with an expressive, playful character and bold natural dyed colours.

This charming example, dating to c. 1890, features a graphic, grand scale design – especially in relation to its size – excecuted in warm vegetabled dyed tones of cornflower blue, ivory and camel, over a terracotta ground. The design in the central field is framed by a series of four individual borders.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders retained on all sides – impressive for a rug over 120 years old. Its colours have taken on a wonderful patina with age.

A handsome tribal accent rug, to suit either a classic or contemporary space.
