Located in central Persia, the city of Isfahan rose to cultural prominence in the 16th century under the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas the Great, who established it as his capital. From that time onward, Isfahan became a celebrated hub for the arts—famed both for its refined school of painting and the extraordinary carpets produced in its ateliers.

This elegant piece, woven around c. 1900, predates the widespread commercialisation of Persian rug production, likely made for domestic use. As such, it reflects a more individual, naive aesthetic—imbued with charm and character that are often absent from later examples. The rich palette features a diverse range of natural dyes, with flowing floral forms in soft saffron, red ochre, and pale blue set against a rare ivory backdrop.

This antique Isfahan rug remains in very good condition and is well-suited for everyday use. The borders are intact on all sides, and the colours have matured beautifully, developing a soft patina with age.
