Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique quality of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate floral motifs one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece.

This strikingly unique late 19th Century example has the creative composition and colour palette of a piece dating to before the commercialisation of carpet weaving in the region – it employs a delicate abrash (or, subtle variation in tone) across the field, in tones of tan and olive green. As well as lending charm and character, this serves as a wonderful backdrop to the array of fresh vegetable dyed colours in its scrolling floral designs, with shades of cornflower and duck egg blues, ivory and ochre red, all of which have taken on a subtle patina with age.

With its borders retained on all sides, this early Malayer rug is in very good condition for everyday use.
