The city of Khorassan, in Northeast Persia, is home to an ancient and prestigious tradition of weaving, stretching back as far as the Sassanid Period (241-651 A.D.) – its pieces are best known today for the diversity of their designs, and the quality of their weaves.

This fine mid-19th Century example features a charming, earthy colour palette, with vegetable dyed tones of aubergine, terracotta and sage green over an ivory ground. The composition employs a series of scrolling ‘botteh’, or paisley, patterns – originally an ancient Zoroastrian motif, representing the evergreen cypress tree, a symbol of everlasting life – across the central field.

In very good condition for everyday use, with its border preserved on all sides – remarkable for a rug of this age – with a characterful, weathered patina.
