Baktiar carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, are well known as among the most distinct, and thus highly sought after, Persian weavings, thanks to their unique combination of the playful, geometric designs of nomadic and tribal rugs, and the scale and high-quality craftsmanship one would expect of a Persian workshop piece.

Unlike most Baktiar carpets, however, this highly unusual 19th-century example features a grand-scale scrolling design, reminiscent of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau patterns, rather than the more traditional graphic forms, executed in high-grade vegetable dyes and lustrous wool. Its colours include cornflower blues, ochre red, hay and teal accents, set against a muted charcoal background. The field has a delicate abrash (ie. a subtle variation in tone), bringing out deep ocean blues and lending charm and complexity to the rug.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, its colours have taken on a mellow patina with age.
