Antique Shirvan rugs are among the most highly sought-after Caucasian weavings, renowned for a nuanced, complex style that sets them apart from other rugs from the region. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols, with an expressive, playful character and bold natural dyed colours.

This charming example, dating to c. 1890, features a graphic, grand scale design – especially in relation to its narrow– excecuted in warm tones of ochre red, muted hay and ivory, set against a complementary denim blue field and framed by a decorative border of good proportions. Being an earlier weaving, this runner has a creativity in its design, and high-grade natural dyes, not found in later examples which would have been made for commercial purposes.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders retained on all sides – impressive for a rug over 120 years old. Its colours have taken on a wonderful patina with age.

With it’s charming tribal naivety, this runner would suit either a classic or contemporary space.
