Antique Karabagh rugs are much sought after by collectors and designers as they boast some of the oldest and most varied designs of all Caucasian weavings, and represent perhaps the finest in quality and artistry amongst pieces from this region – these became widely popular in the West toward the end of the 19th Century, and can be spotted in many grand historic homes around the UK and Europe.

This striking 19th Century example showcases what is known as Herati design, drawn from earlier Persian weavings, which employs a curving motif in an all-over pattern, suggestive of fish swimming in the sea. The drawing is excecuted in a wide range of fresh vegetable dyed tones, including sage green, muted coral and soft blues, over a field with a charming abrash (ie. delicate variation in colour) which adds great depth and character. Its border is of good proportions, and features a decorative motif creatively repeated in a range of colours.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use,though with some age related restoration, which has been finished to an excellent standard – its colours have taken on a mellow patina over the years.
