Hamadan is one of the oldest cities in Persia and is now one of the most productive and diverse weaving centres in the country. Many various ethnic groups settled in the surrounding region over the centuries and this cultural diversity is reflected in the unique designs of Hamadan weavings.

This vintage example showcases a variation on what is known as Herati design, drawn from earlier Persian weavings, which employs a curving motif in an all-over pattern, initially suggestive of fish swimming in the sea. This is executed in high-grade lustrous wool, with a variety of colours, including warm green and ochre tones, in the central field set against a light terracotta background, framed by a rare ivory decorative border.

In excellent condition for everyday use, this runner combines a quiet formality with a tribal aesthetic, and would make a fine addition to a wide variety of interior styles – rare in this unusually long and narrow format.
