The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool. These pieces were especially popular during the 19th Century, when this example was made, as a staple of French Empire style design.

This remarkably early example, dating to the reign of Charles X, circa 1820, is a a truly exceptional example of its type – the design is worked over a rare, fresh sage green ground, with a delicate ton-sur-ton effect in the stamped motifs repeated across the field. This is set in a charming contrast with the light ivory and pastel tones used in the floral patterns of the medallion, spandrels, and wide decorative border.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, astonishingly so for a carpet around 200 years old, though with some age-related restoration – its dyes have taken on a delicate patina over the years.
