The city of Tabriz in north west Persia has been a major city of fine weaving since the 14th century. It experienced an artistic revival at the end of the 19th century and saw the emergence of one of the most important and influential Master weavers of the era, Hadji Jallili. He created magnificent court carpets with his unique creative drawings using light colour palettes and impeccable workmanship making them much sought after by interior designers and collectors. The best Tabriz carpets of this era are attributed to him and his workshop, many of which may be found in grand historic and stately homes across the UK and Europe.

This carpet features a restrained colour palette, with neutral tones of soft caramel, olive green, and ochre, all in vegetable dyes that have taken on a fine patina with age, lending the work a sense of understated grace. The composition employs a soft, ivory field, serving as a subtle backdrop to the earthy colours in the drawing – despite using a medallion however, this rug has an unusually well-balanced, open layout, with an all-over design, well complemented by its restrained use of colour.

This early Tabriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use. The multiple outer borders have been retained on all sides, remarkable for a carpet dating to the 19th Century.
