The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool. Portières like these, intended to hang as curtains around a doorway – though could equally be used as rugs – were particularly popular during the 19th Century, as a staple of French Empire design.

This handwoven vintage pair represent a modern reimaginging of the sought after examples of the early 19th Century, featuring an ivory field as a compliemnetary background to the scrolling floral motifs in the drawing, in shades of caramel and rose, and framed by a plain sage green border of good proportions. The fine quality of the weave lends a crisp quality to its design.
