C. 1930s Art Deco Chinese Carpet
C. 1930s Art Deco Chinese Carpet
£ 3,000
Led by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops operated from 1924 to the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets mark a significant achievement in 20th-century design. These carpets are highly coveted for their distinct blend of traditional Chinese motifs with design elements drawn from the Art Deco style, which was a dominant force in the decorative arts across America and Europe during that era.
This elegant Art Deco Chinese carpet is a fine example of early 20th Century weaving, with a muted silver grey field, and dusky pink border, exuding a sophistication and quiet formality, with an elegant cherry blossom motif across the field, creating a playful contrast with the carpet’s otherwise simple, restrained composition. The high grade wool has a silky quality, lending a great feeling of depth to its colours.
In very good practical condition for everyday use, this Art Deco Chinese carpet has retained all its original borders and fringes.
A stylish example to compliment a wide variety of interior spaces.
