The term ‘Serapi’ belongs to a subset of high-end Heriz carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, known for their higher quality weaves and simpler, more refined designs. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction and creative vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs, and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Serapi-Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This fine early example features a bold, graphic hooked motif, repeated across the field in a variety of earthy red ochre, terracotta and cornflower tones, set against a fresh ivory ground, framed by a wide border of good proportions – a restained palette, well suited to this runner’s well-balanced, open composition. Being an earlier piece, from before the commercialisation of weaving in the region, it boasts a fine weave, lending a crisp clarity to the drawing, and a more expressive, charming naivety in the design.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with a mellow age related patina to its vegetable dyed colours.
