Large Belle Epoque Aubusson Carpet
Large Belle Epoque Aubusson Carpet
The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool. These pieces were especially popular during the 19th Century, when this example was made, as a staple of French Empire style design.
A fine Aubusson carpet, dating to the Belle Epoque period, featuring a wonderful muted sage green and ivory ground, with scrolling and floral designs in shades of caramel and rose, framed by a border of generous proportions.
This is a stunning piece of an impressive size, retained in very good condition for everyday use; a true design classic, to furnish a stylish interior.
