Antique Khorassan carpet

Origin: Persia
Circa: 1850
Size: 7.80 x 6.08 metres25'9 x 20' feet
Reference number: 99706

The city of Khorassan in north east Persia has an extremely venerable weaving tradition going back to the 5th century. Its unique carpets are distinguished by their ideal combination of elegance, originality and distinctive styles.  The 19th century saw the creation of superb quality room-size Khorassan carpets tailored for western and European furnishing tastes.

This mid-19th century Khorassan has a remarkable crisp drawing, hence the clarity of the design. The muted blue field provides great contrast for its overall monochrome drawing, framed by multiple creative borders. The vegetable dyed harmonious colours have aged nicely.  Has some age-related wear and older restoration but is still a beautiful and usable piece. A timeless rug with a quiet formality to add character to any space.
