Unusual 19th Century Khorassan Carpet
Unusual 19th Century Khorassan Carpet
The city of Khorassan, in Northeast Persia, is home to an ancient and prestigious tradition of weaving, stretching back as far as the Sassanid Period (241-651 A.D.) – its pieces are best known today for the diversity of their designs, the quality of their weaves, and their uniquely diverse colour palettes.
This striking 19th Century example features a grand-scale scrolling design drawn from Classical examples of the 18th Century, with great feeling of spontaneity and creativity, with a rare sky blue colour ground, well suited to this piece’s well-balanced, open composition. The artist has used a restrained, elegant palette, with tones of muted burgnudy and light ochre shades, and framed by a border of generous proportions – its fine weave lending a crisp clarity to the drawing. Early Khorassans of this type are rare to find in this large size – given its age, large format, unqiue and spontaneous design, and from the fact it bears the signature of a masterweaver of its era, we believe it may have been a special commission.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its outer borders retained on all sides, though with some minor age related wear – its vergetable dyed colours have taken on a charming patina with age.
A sophisticated workshop weaving, with a great sense of space and lightness, and among the most interesting and attactive examples of its type we have had the pleasure of adding to our collection in some time.
Should this wonderful carpet be of interest, we would be more than happy to arrange to bring this to you to view in situ at your location, anywhere in the UK, or at our North London studio showroom, by appointment.
