The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving since at least the 14th Century. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design. This early 20th-century Tabriz carpet is a particularly rare and sophisticated example of its type, since it demonstrates a much greater creative freedom than one would expect of a Tabriz rug from its era.

A strikingly unique Tabriz carpet, dating to the end of the 19th Century, with a wonderfully dynamic all-over design inspired by European Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau weavings. It features an uncommon sky blue field, serving as a complementary backdrop to the array of muted colours in its drawing – including ochre reds, tan, and duck egg and denim blues, framed by a wide border. Being an earlier weaving, it boasts wonderful vegetable dyed colours and an exceptionally high-grade weave; given the unique quality of the design, this was likely a special commision, originally intended for the European market of a person of title.

This 19th Century Tabriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its outer borders on all sides – its natural dyed colours have taken on a graceful patina with age.
