Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th Century, woven in the same region as the equally sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. These pieces are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they manage to harmonise both tribal and formal elements of rug design, and thus have the versatility to suit a wide variety of interior styles.

This early example – dating to the end of the 19th Century – features an elegant, well-balanced allover design in soft earth tones, set again a muted grey-blue field; this motif, known as Herati, is drawn from weavings of the 18th Century and earlier, and is believed to represent fish swimming in the sea or in a garden pool. The border is of wide proportions and frames the central field nicely, and the overall effect is of a delicate, understated grace.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its original outer borders on all sides – its colours have taken on a charming, mellow patina with age.
