Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique quality of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate floral motifs one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece.

This early Malayer carpet, dating to the end of the 19th Century, is an especially fine and unusual example of its type, with a stamped rose design, reminiscent of European Arts & Crafts weavings (and indicating this was possibly woven as a special commission for the Western market) over a soft chestnut colour ground, in a simple earth palette of muted coral and tan (rather than the conventional deep blues and reds) framed by two individual decorative borders. Its all-over design lends the carpet a well-balanced, open feeling, well suited to a modern space despite its age – being an earlier rug, it boasts a high-grade weave, giving a crisp carity to its drawing.

Preserved in very good practical condition for everyday use, though with some age-related restoration, finished to a high standard – its gracefully weathered vegetable dyes lend the work a characterful patina.
