Antique Baktiar Carpet
Antique Baktiar Carpet
£ 14,800
Baktiar carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, are renowned as among the most distinct, and therefore highly sought after, Persian weavings, thanks to their unique combination of the playful, geometric designs of nomadic and tribal rugs with the scale and fine craftsmanship associated with Persian workshop pieces.
This handsome early 20th Century example features a charming all-over design, rather than the conventional central medallion motif, with a checkerboard pattern creatively repeated across the field in a wide variety of patterns. Its softly faded, earthy vegetable-dyed palette includes muted tones of sky blue, warm terracotta, camel and faded coral, all framed by an ivory border of great proportions. As an earlier piece, it also displays a high-grade weave in lustrous wool, lending crisp clarity to the design, executed in a grand scale given relative to its size.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders and fringes preserved on all sides, and showing a gentle, characterful age-related patina.
A creative early village weaving, with an expressive design and a rare, squarish format, suited to a wide variety of interiors.
