Baktiar carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, are well known as among the most distinct, and thus highly sought after, Persian weavings, thanks to their unique combination of the playful, geometric designs of nomadic and tribal rugs, and the scale and high-quality craftsmanship one would expect of a Persian workshop piece.

This characterful early 20th Century example boasts a charming all-over composition, known as a Garden Design, with checkerboard panels repeated across the field with a creative variety of motifs in earthy vegetable-dyed colours, including tones of cornflower blue, warm terracotta, camel and sage green, all framed by a decorative border. Being an earlier piece, it also showcases a high-grade weave in lustrous wool, lending a crisp clarity to the design.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides, with a mild but characterful age-related patina.

A handsome tribal accent rug, with a charming spontaneity which would suit a wide variety of interiors.
