Antique Karabagh rugs are much sought after by collectors and designers as they boast some of the oldest and most varied designs of all Caucasian weavings, and represent perhaps the finest in quality and artistry amongst pieces from this region – these became widely popular in the West toward the end of the 19th Century, and can be spotted in many grand historic homes around the UK and Europe.

This strikingly minimalist Early 20th Century example showcases an unusually modern design, with an earthy palette of terracotta, olive green, elephant grey and ivory, in fine vegetable dyes, and an unusually grand-scale drawing, especially in relation to its narrow format – the uniformity of colour across the field and border lends the work a rare feeling of openness and balance, and the abrash – that is, the subtle variation in tone – in the ground gives its stripped back, minimalist composition a sense of depth and character.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, still preserving its original inner borders and fringes on all sides.
