The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool. These pieces were especially popular during the 19th Century, when this example was made, as a staple of French Empire style design.

A fine Aubusson carpet, dating to the Belle Epoque period, featuring a wonderful ton–ton effect in the drawing over its muted sage green ground, with scrolling and floral designs framed by a border of generous proportions in soft burgundy – set in a charming contrast with the light ivory and pastel tones used in the floral patterns of the medallion and decorative elements throughout.

This is a wonderfuly elegant piece, retained in very good condition for everyday use – its colours have taken on a delicate patina with age.
