C. 1930 Art Deco Chinese Carpet
C. 1930 Art Deco Chinese Carpet
£ 6,000
Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design. These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.
This elegant 1930s example, woven in soft, high-grade wool, features a wonderful ton-sur-ton effect across its coffee-toned central field, with a delicate floral design, executed in teal and burgundy, in the corners – a refined, understated palette, well suited to thies piece’s open, well balanced composition.
A beautiful and unusual example, in very good to excellent condition, to complement either a contemporary or a classic interior.
