Modernist Shahsavan Design Kilim

The Shahsavan people, native to Northern Iran and Azerbaijan, are well known for their skills in weaving, particularly in the construction of fine, durable flatweaves, often employing the bold, graphic designs also common to carpets from the Caucasus, with a tribal charm that has made them widely popular decorative pieces among collections and designers alike.

This finely handwoven kilim represents a modern take on classic early Shahsavan pieces, but with a distinctly mid-century aesthetic sensibility. It features an earthy two-tone palette, with soft ivory and hazelnut, in a simple, restrained design, to which the high-quality weave adds a crisp clarity.

The subtle abrash – or, colour variation – in the darker sections lends a feeling of depth and charm to its otherwise stripped back, minimalist composition.

A stylish example, combining modernist design elements with traditional weaving techniques and soft vegetable dyes.
