Woven in the Heriz region of Northwest Persia during the late 19th century, this carpet is the work of a storied weaving tradition known for its creativity, clarity of design, and village craftsmanship. Unlike the urban rugs of other regions, Heriz carpets were made by tribal and village weavers who favoured bold, geometric patterns and a more graphic aesthetic. The region’s access to naturally dyed wool and durable local materials allowed these rugs to gain a reputation for their resilience and long-lasting beauty; in our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

The background of this early Heriz carpet is a soft ochre red, earthy yet vibrant, which provides a complementary ground for the dynamic floral motifs and lattice-like framework. Rare sky blue is used to define the spandrels, adding a fresh and unexpected lift to the palette, with a striking, very uncommon sage green tone in the corners. The wide border, with its dynamic, stylized rosettes and scrolling vines repeated in a variety of shapes and colours across the main and inner sections, frames the central field nicely.

In good original, unrestored condition for everyday use, retaining its full borders; nonetheless, we would recommend some light restoration to make it perfect, which we would be happy to take care of. The natural vegetable dyes have mellowed gracefully, giving the carpet a rich, characterful patina that only time can produce.

With its rare colour pairing and bold tribal aesthetic, this is among the most unusual examples of Heriz weaving we have had the pleasure of aquiring – rare in this large format.
