Woven in the Heriz region of Northwest Persia during the 19th century, this carpet comes from a storied weaving tradition known for its strength, clarity of design, and village craftsmanship. Unlike the urban rugs of other regions, Heriz carpets were made by tribal and village weavers who favored bold, geometric patterns and a more graphic aesthetic. The region’s access to naturally dyed wool and durable local materials allowed these rugs to gain a reputation for their resilience and long-lasting beauty; in our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This late 19th Century example boasts a wonderfully creative design, with carefully woven hooked motifs, in tones of duck egg and denim blues, with tan and sea green accents, over a soft terracotta ground, all in well-aged vegetable dyes, and framed by a decorative border of good proportions. The muted sky blue in the spandrels is especially attractive, and the uniformity of colour across the field and the border – rather than the traditional stark contrast, where the border would be a dark indigo – gives the composition a rare feeling of space and balance.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with a mellow age related patina to its colours, with some minor age related restoration.
