Antique Shirvan rugs are among the most highly sought-after Caucasian weavings, renowned for a nuanced, complex style that sets them apart from other rugs from the region. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols, with an expressive, playful character and bold natural dyed colours.

This wonderful c. 1900s example is one of those rare finds which, despite its age, has a distinctly modern feel – it employs soft, earthy tones of tan, red ochre, tobacco and indigo, in repeated bands across the field, accented with creatively drawn, delicate abstract motifs which add a real feeling of character to its otherwise stripped back, minimalist design. The fine quality of its weave lends a crisp clarity to its drawing.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use – its fine vegetable-dyed colours have taken on a charming patina over the years. Since most pieces of this type are longer and narrower, the furnishing size of this example is quite rare.

A stylish tribal weaving, with a restrained palette and design which would lend itself well to a contemporary interior.
