Early Shirvan Rug
Early Shirvan Rug
£ 2,450
Antique Shirvan rugs are among the most highly sought-after Caucasian weavings, renowned for a nuanced, complex style that sets them apart from other rugs from the region. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols, with an expressive, playful character and bold natural dyed colours.
This charming example, dating to the turn of the 20th Century, features an expressive, bold design – especially in relation to its smaller format – excecuted in warm earthy tones, set against a complementary denim blue field and framed by a decorative border of good proportions. Being an earlier weaving, this rug has a creativity in its drawing, and high-grade natural dyes, not found in later examples which would have been made for commercial purposes.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its original borders retained on all sides, and its original fringes still knotted – impressive for a rug around 120 years old. Its colours have taken on a wonderful patina with age.
With it’s charming tribal naivety, this accent rug would suit either a classic or contemporary space.
