Commissioned by the Manchester-based firm Ziegler & Co., Ziegler carpets were originally crafted in Sultanabad (modern-day Arak) to cater to Western tastes, blending traditional Persian motifs with European design sensibilities. The result was a series of rugs characterized by grand scale patterns, subtle color palettes, and exceptional craftsmanship – these pieces can be found in historic homes across Europe and the UK, and continue to be highly sought after for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

This striking 19th Century example features a grand-scale scrolling vine design, over a rare ivory colour ground, well suited to this piece’s well-balanced, open composition. The artist has used a wonderfully light, playful palette, with shades of sage green, cornflower blue, coral and turqoise, set against a pale backdrop and framed by a wide, highly decorative terracotta border – its fine weave lending a crisp clarity to the drawing.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its original plain outer borders retained on all sides; remarkable for a carpet dating to c. 1890 – its vergetable dyed colours have taken on a charming patina with age.

A sophisticated workshop weaving, with a great sense of space and lightness, which would feel at home a wide variety of interiors.
