Woven circa 1880 in the renowned Laver district of Kirman, this elegant carpet reflects the refined aesthetic and technical mastery that define the finest Laver Kirman pieces. During the late 19th century, Laver Kirman workshops were heavily influenced by French decorative arts, particularly in their use of fluid curvilinear drawing, intricate florals, and soft, pastel palettes. These pieces were often designed to appeal to European tastes, blending Persian craftsmanship with a Western aesthetic sensibility, resulting in carpets that were as culturally cosmopolitan as they were visually harmonious, and among our personal favourites.

This early Laver Kirman has large-scale overall palmettes instead of the traditional central medallion motif, in tones of soft burgundy and sage green over an ivory field – its silky wool, together with the remarkable quality of its weave, engenders a real clarity and crispness in the design. Since this exquisite example was created before the commercialisation of carpet weaving, it bears the unique character and creative use of colour of earlier pieces of the 18th century, with an unusually open, spacious design for an example of this small furnishing size..

The piece is in very good, practical condition for everyday use. Its age has imparted a gentle patina to the naturally dyed colours, the pile is even and the plain outer borders are still retained—a rarity for a carpet of this era.
