Fine Antique Sarouk-Feraghan Rug
Fine Antique Sarouk-Feraghan Rug
£ 3,600
Early Feraghan and Sarouk carpets were popular during the 19th century, woven the same region as the equally popular and much sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. These carpets are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they balance both tribal and formal elements of rug design beautifully.
Being an early work, this piece showcases a remarkably fine weave, hence the crisp clarity of its =drawing. The deep charcoal field is a great backdrop to simple all-over design, executed in a harmonious variety of vegtable dyed colours, including celadon green, ochre reds and ivory, framed by three individual borders.
This Feraghan carpet is in very good practical condition, with some minor age-related restoration, completed to a high standard – it’s colours have developed a charming, mellow patina over the years.
A timeless work of art to complement a tasteful setting.
