The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool.

Styled in the Aubusson tradition, this elegant example has characteristics of French Savonnerie carpets of the 18th Century, featuring an olive-green field with a creative all-over design woven in naturally dyed colours; hints of ivory, terracotta, and sage green accents in creatively repeated floral motifs, framed by a border of great proportions. The composition of this piece is made still more remarkable by how fine a weave it has, lending a vivid character to its drawing.
