Rug weaving in the city of Qum only started at the beginning of the 20th century and the city quickly established itself  as a centre for exceptional fine weavings.  Qum is known for their unique decorative carpets with classically precise drawings and luxurious wool, often merino, setting it apart from other Persian weaving centres.

This fine 1930s Qum carpet with its delicate tones of light ochre and sage green set against a soft ivory ground, has a unique composition in comparison to other examples of its type. Its creative design is composed of repeats of the evergreen cyrpess tree forms across the field, from earlier rugs of the 17th century – an ancient Zoroastrian symbol, associated with everlasting life. Being an earlier weaving, it features gracefully-aged organic dyes, a lustrous wool, likely Merino a similar quality, and a high-grade weave, lending a crisp clarity to its drawing.

In excellent condition, still retaining its outer borders and original fringes on all sides.
