Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only established itself as a centre of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a reputation for the unique creativity of their designs, as well as high-quality of the wool from which they are made.

This example represents the best of both worlds – being an earlier piece, made before the commercialisation of carpet weaving, it boasts a much greater quality weave and soft lamb’s wool – either Merino, or a similar grade – while incorporating the graphic motifs of sought-after 19th Century rugs from the Caucasus. The design is a dyanmic all-over pattern of geometric forms, rendered with a lyrical fluidity and with a crisp clarity to the drawing. Its palette is restrained yet bold, employing blues, ranging from duck egg greys to cornflower, and earthy terracotta, over a complimentary ivory ground, and framed by a decorative border of good proportions.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its plain outer borders retained on all sides, as well as its original fringes.
