Fine Signed Kashan Carpet, c. 1930s
Fine Signed Kashan Carpet, c. 1930s
£ 12,600
The city of Kashan, among the best-known and highly-ranked Persian rug-weaving centers, first rose to prominence in the 16th Century, under the Safavid Dynasty. These workshops earned a reputation for producing many of the most highly sought-after rugs of the Classical period and continued their work into the early 20th Century.
This Kashan carpet is a high-end workshop weaving of the 1930s, bearing the signature of one of the masterweavers of its era – an elegant example, featuring simplified design characteristics of earlier 17th Century weavings, over a soft ivory ground in lustrous wool. One attractive feature is the uniformity of colour between the central field and the border – as opposed to the traditional stark contrast – lending the work a sense of openness and balance, making it a more versatile option for a variety of interiors. Despite dating to the 1930s, this rug has a surprisingly modern aesthetic sensibility.
Retained in very good to excellent condition for everyday use, with its original borders and fringes preserved on all sides.
A stylish carpet, with an understated grace that would lend itself equally to a classic or contemporary interior. We strongly recommend viewing this carpet in person, to fully appreciate the subtlety of its colours – we can arrange this at our North London studio-showroom, or in situ at your location, anywhere in the UK.
