Fine Vintage Aubusson of Savonnerie Design
Fine Vintage Aubusson of Savonnerie Design
£ 3,500
The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool.
Though woven in the Aubusson tradition, this creative vintage example has characteristics of French Savonnerie carpets of the 18th Century: a muted cognac field, with a wonderfully spontaneous all-over floral design, and accents in sky blue, ivory and soft pastel tones. The composition of this piece is made still more remarkable by how fine a weave it has, lending a vivid character to its drawing.
In excellent condition for everyday use.
A sophisticated example fit for any tasteful interior.
Critically recognised and accredited
