Gabbeh rugs have been woven for centuries by the nomadic peoples of Persia’s Zagros Mountains, and are widely appreciated as highly desirable tribal weavings thanks to their simple, graphic designs and top-quality wool.

This striking example, dating to the 1940s, features a bold, minimalist design, with an irregular multicoloured checkerboard pattern worked in a wide variety of earthy vegetable-dyed tones – including burgundy, sea green, camel, soft elephant grey and ochre reds – framed by a decorative border, all in lustrous high-grade wool.

Retained in excellent condition for everyday use, its colours have taken on a mellow patina with age.

Combining naive tribal appeal with a modern aesthetic sensibility, this example would compliment a wide variety of interiors.
