Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th Century, woven in the same region as the equally sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. These pieces are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they manage to harmonise both tribal and formal elements of rug design, and thus have the versatility to suit a wide variety of interior styles.

This early example – dating to the turn of the 20th Century – bearing the signature of a masterweaver of its era, features an elegant, well-balanced allover design in a wide palette of vegetable dyed colours including sage green, ochre reds and light cornflower blues, for which its muted bronze ground makes an elegant background. The border is of wide proportions and frames the central field nicely, and the overall effect is of a delicate, understated grace. Judging from its lustrous wool, remarkable quality, and rare square format, it is very likely this was originally woven as a special commission for a person of title.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its original outer borders on all sides – its colours have taken on a charming, mellow patina with age.
