Square Shape Khorassan Rug
Square Shape Khorassan Rug
The city of Khorassan, in Northeast Persia, is home to an ancient and prestigious tradition of weaving, stretching back as far as the Sassanid Period (241-651 A.D.) – its pieces are best known today for the diversity of their designs, the quality of their weaves, and their uniquely diverse colour palettes.
This lovely early 20th Century example, in a rare square format, features a soft ivory background, with a simple all-over design, rather than the conventional central medallion, and a delicate ton-sur-ton effect in the drawing – all framed by a decorative border of good proportions.
Retained in very good practical condition, with its outer borders and fringes preserved on all sides; its vegetable dyed colours have taken on a mellow patina with age.
With an understated elegance, this Khorassan rug has the versatility to suit a wide variety of settings.
