Subtle c. 1890s Malayer Rug
Subtle c. 1890s Malayer Rug
£ 3,000
Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique character of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings, with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate drawing one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece.
This early Malayer rug features a rare elphant grey ground, overlaid with a charming all-over design, repeated across the field in tones of earthy tan and sage green, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, and surrounded by a wide, decorative five-part border with a wonderful scrolling floral motif; a bold composition, relative to this piece’s narrow format.
This 19th Century Malayer rug is in very good condition for everyday use, with good pile throughout and its outer borders fully retained – remarkable for a rug of this age. It’s vegetable dyed colours have taken on a wonderful patina with age.
A timeless example, with a discreet elegance that would lend itself to a variety of settings.
