Unusual Afshar rug

£ 4,000

Origin: Persia
Circa: 1890
Size: 1.54 x 1.30 metres5' x 4'3 feet
Reference number: A26817

This charming 19th-century Afshar rug has a rare ivory field and a highly creative drawing in which each pattern in the central field and surrounding borders is cleverly repeated in a different colour composition with natural vegetable-dyed colours which have improved nicely with age.

Antique Afshar rugs are tribal rugs woven by nomads in south-west Persia and are highly appreciated for their crisp weaves, unique drawings and use of vegetable-dyed colours. They stand out when compared to the more traditional pieces woven in the surrounding region.

In very good practical condition, still retaining all its individual borders on all four sides and original fringes at both ends, a remarkable feature for a rug of its age.

A true work of art to complement any setting.
