The Turkic-speaking Afshar nomads, largely settled in Southern Persia, boast a long tradition of rug-weaving, and antique Afshar pieces are well known for their expressive designs and high knot-density, often woven with the luxurious wool harvested from the herds of the tribesmen themselves, renowned not only for being exceptionally soft, but also for how well it takes to the dyes used, lending the Afshar weavings a wonderfully vivid palette.

This early example is no exception; dating to c. 1910, it employs an attractive olive green field, serving as an understated backdrop to the graphic floral motifs – rather than the more traditional geometric patterns and dark colours – excecuted with a charming naivety, in a muted, earthy palette of vegetable dyes; and in a grand scale, relative to the piece’s small format.

In very good practical condition for everyday use, still retaining its outer borders on all sides – its organic dyes have taken on a charming patina with age.

An unusually elegant piece, with a feeling of space and balance that would add character to any interior.
