Woven in the Heriz region of Northwest Persia at the end of the 19th century, this carpet comes from a storied weaving tradition known for its strength, clarity of design, and village craftsmanship. Unlike the urban rugs of other regions, Heriz carpets were made by tribal and village weavers who favored bold, geometric patterns and a more graphic aesthetic. The region’s access to naturally dyed wool and durable local materials allowed these rugs to gain a reputation for their resilience and long-lasting beauty; in our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This circa 1890s example boasts a wonderful overall design, with carefully woven hooked motifs, in tones of duck egg blue, hay and sea green accents, over an earthy tan background, all in well-aged vegetable dyes, and framed by a decorative border of good proportions. The touches of muted sky blue and bottle green are especially rare and attractive, making this carpet stand out compared to other examples of its era. A balanced, spontaneous composition, with the central medallion much more understated than in more traditional pieces, which, especially combined with the expressive forms in the drawing, lends itself well to a contemporary setting.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with a mellow age related patina to its colours.
