The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving since at least the 14th Century. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design. This early 20th-century Tabriz carpet is a particularly rare and sophisticated example of its type, since it demonstrates a much greater creative freedom than one would expect of a Tabriz rug from its era.

A strikingly unique Tabriz carpet, dating to the 1920s, with a wonderfully dynamic design reminiscent of European Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau weavings. It features an uncommon ivory field, serving as a complementary backdrop to the array of fresh vegetable dyed tones in its drawing – including ochre reds, tan, and duck egg and denim blues. One especially attractive feature is the uniformity of colour across the central field and the main border – rather than the more typical stark contrast – which lends the work a rare sense of space and balance.

This antique Tabriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its outer borders on all sides – its natural dyed colours have taken on a graceful patina with age.
